What HEIC is, why Windows and Android struggle with it, and how to batch-convert HEIC to JPG without uploading your camera roll.
High Efficiency Image Container — the default iPhone format since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPG with better color depth. It's genuinely a better format. The problem is everything else: older Windows versions, many Android apps, most government portals, printing kiosks and web upload forms can't read it.
Plenty of converters will take your HEICs — by uploading your entire photo library to their servers. For photos of your home, family and documents, that's a privacy trade you don't need to make.
