File size, quality, transparency and browser support compared — a practical decision guide for photos, graphics and the web.
Photos for web or storage: WebP. Photos for universal compatibility (email, portals, old software): JPG. Graphics, logos, screenshots, anything transparent: PNG. That's 90% of decisions. The rest of this article is the 'why' with numbers.
On a typical 1920×1280 photo at visually-identical quality, expect roughly: PNG ~2.1MB, JPG (q85) ~380KB, WebP (q80) ~260KB. WebP wins by ~30% over JPG because it uses the same VP8 video compression ideas Google shipped in WebM.
PNG and WebP both support transparency; JPG never can (transparent areas become solid color). Both WebP and PNG offer lossless modes; for pixel-perfect archiving PNG remains the safest universal choice.
WebP works in every modern browser since 2020 — but plenty of desktop apps, CMS plugins, portals and form validators still reject it. That single fact is why 'WebP to JPG' searches exploded: people receive WebP files their software can't open.
Whatever direction you need — Bulk Image Converter converts mixed batches to any target format locally. PNG→JPG for portals, WebP→JPG for stubborn apps, JPG→WebP for your website. One queue, one ZIP, zero uploads.
